Northeastern is known for its number one ranking for co-op opportunities. However, it’s about time for this school to be noticed for its up and coming fashion scene.
Northeastern’s co-eds tend to state their influences as musical, financial or social. These influences are the key to finding what shapes the Northeastern style community.
The new man on the street comes from Seattle, where he has lived for the past year. His name is Nicholas William Smith, or Nick to his friends. He is a 20 year old, political science major. What attracted The News to Smith was his mohawk, combined with funky trends mixing plaid prints, blazers, army boots and a sense of confidence that stood out in the crowds.
Northeastern News: What makes your style not only stand out, but influence a lot of people?
Nick Smith: Most people at Northeastern have similar style, so that’s why I tend to stand out. Influence-wise, I guess I tend to influence people. When I got a mohawk, my friend got a mohawk as well.
News: If you saw yourself on the street, what would you think?
Smith: I would think of a punk influence, at first. [At first glance] it’s hard to tell, a person may look scary or different and they may turn out to be an amazing person, but a person who looks normal may turn out to be horrible.
News: Does music play a big part in how you dress?
Smith: Usually, I am associated with a punk/indie look, but I don’t just listen to that [kind of music]. Sure, [music] influences me, but I don’t lean toward any style too much. I’m pretty well rounded, I listen to Craig David, and I’ll admit, I shake my booty to Destiny’s Child, if I want to.
News: Does fashion define who you are?
Smith: No, I’m always changing. A year ago, I was totally different. I was a different person, and now, I’m a different person. My style changes, as I change .
News: Do you set limits for yourself on how you dress?
Smith: No, I never say, ‘I wouldn’t wear that.’ I wear what I like, fashion does not set limits on my personality. Some people won’t associate with others because of their genres. I don’t judge [people] based on fashion.
News: Do you think you fit in at Northeastern, style wise?
Smith: No, but that’s fine. I have a lot of friends who don’t judge me and they are from all sorts of different genres of fashion.
News: If you could describe your personal style in one word. What would it be?
Smith: Me.
