Boogie Nights, Magnolia director saw new film as a challenge

Paul Thomas Anderson is on the move.

His two previous movies, “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia,” did fabulously at the box office. He now has a new picture called “Punch-Drunk Love” starring Adam Sandler. At thirty-two years old, Anderson is happy with his success. He lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, singer Fiona Apple. For now, he’s away from home promoting his new movie.

Anderson was named best director at the Cannes Film Festival last August.

“Yeah, I’ll take that.”, he says of the prestigious award as he smiles. He is at an interview with college reporters at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston. He notices the book “Frankenstein” on the table.

“I love this book,” he says. “It’s about creating something that gets out of your hands. You sort of feel like that a little bit when you make a movie.”

Although he loves to read and write, Anderson was never one for standard education. He dropped out of NYU film school after just two days; thinking that he would be better on his own. He was right. After getting his tuition back, he used it to fund his first film, “Cigarettes and Coffee.”
