Women’s Soccer: Huskies 0-2 in conference play

By Maggie Cassidy

The women’s soccer team dropped its first two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matchups, falling 2-0 to George Mason Friday and 1-0 to Towson Sunday.

The Towson loss came in the midst of a compound leg fracture suffered by junior forward Jenna Lucchesi in the second half after a hard tackle, delaying the game for longer than an hour. Lucchesi was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to her right ankle.

Before Lucchesi’s injury in Sunday’s game, the Huskies had already dug themselves a 1-0 hole. Towson’s Kaitlyn Zamroz headed one past NU keeper Annie Petrofsky two minutes into the second half for the eventual game-winner.

Petrofsky redeemed herself when she foiled a penalty kick later in the half, diving right to make the one-handed save.

Matz said despite Zamroz’s tally, his team played a strong second half before and after the Lucchesi injury, moving into an offensive-minded 4-3-3 stance to try to create scoring opportunities.

“We were actually playing one of our better offensive games,” Matz said. “We had a lot of quality chances to get on the board and get a goal.”

Matz said Towson keeper Brandi Daniels, who he described as “one of the best in the conference,” was a force in the net, stopping all of NU’s 12 shots.

“Even after Jenna got hurt, the team came out and responded remarkably well,” Matz said. “We had some great chances and she came up with same great saves.
