Doggett fields question from students, clarifies position

Jeff Doggett, director of community relations and government affairs, addressed rising student concerns about the recent arrests on Mission Hill at Monday’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, talking for more than three hours.

“The biggest concern with students is that this year the neighbors of the community are trying to make a show, to crack down on parties,” said Michael Rockland in an interview with The News. “But the [real] problem with that is the students have little to no interaction with the neighbors and there are lateral talks between neighbors about the students and lateral talks between students about neighbors and nothing to bridge the gap.”

At the SGA meeting, which more than 150 students attended, Doggett said mending the gap between residents and students begins with respect.

“I’ve never had a neighbor come up to me and say every single student is bad, banish all [those who] live off-campus,” Doggett said.

But when asked how students can reach out to the community, Doggett answered, “One neighbor can’t take 30 calls
