Swimming ‘ Diving: Huskies take close match against BC

By AJ Mercincavage

The swimming and diving team prevailed against Boston College Friday, winning by just two points, 151 to 149, to earn the team their third straight victory over the Eagles.

“We got off to an unbelievable start,” said head coach Roy Coates. “It was great, especially for it to happen on Parents’ Day.”

The Huskies finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay, first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke and took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. But BC’s depth kept the meet close with several second, third and fourth finishes by the Eagles.

“Being so new to the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association), BC is a big rivalry for us. We’re always in this spot with BC,” Coates said.

The Eagles gained momentum during the 200-yard backstroke, sweeping the event with a first, second and third finish.

“The 200-back really turned the meet in their favor,” Coates said. “But Emily Sutliff’s 500-free and Kara Lane’s 100-fly kept us in it. Three meter diving was a big help as well.”

First place in the 500-free brought the Huskies within 10 points of BC, and placing first in the 100-fly chipped the Eagles’ lead to just five. Finally, three meter diving allowed Northeastern to reclaim the lead.

In the next event, the 200-yard individual medley, Kathrine Fugge and Alena Alvarez took first and second place, giving the Huskies a 15-point lead heading into the last relay event.

The Eagles made a final push for victory with a first and second place finish in the 4×100-yard freestyle relay. But Northeastern’s third place relay gave the Huskies a decisive 2-point edge in the meet’s finale.

Northeastern’s next dual meet will be at Central Connecticut at noon Oct. 20.
