Tenants deliver letter of protest

Tenants from St. Botolph Terrace Apartments on Massachusetts Avenue met Oct. 5 to deliver a letter to President Joseph Aoun’s office, protesting the sale of their low-income, multi-family housing development.

The residents, who convened at Carter Playground on Columbus Avenue, were met with opposition by the Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD).

“They’re treating us as if we’re criminals. We’re just tenants trying to save our homes,” said Rosalind Dawson, a 20-year resident of St. Botolph Street.

The letter, written on behalf of the 52 families living at St. Botolph Terrace Apartments, requests a meeting to discuss Northeastern’s intent to buy these Section 8 apartments and convert them to student residences or non-rental housing by 2023, according to a press release by Mass Alliance of Housing Urban Development (HUD) tenants.

The residents said the plan was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) without the residents’ knowledge.
