Women’s Soccer: Injury-filled season ends

In the last game of its injury-heavy season, the women’s soccer team couldn’t escape one last visit to the emergency room. Junior defender Brenna Matthews left Parsons Field in an ambulance during the team’s 3-0 loss to Hofstra Thursday.

Matthews took an elbow to the back of her head, aggravating pain from a concussion suffered in a game against UNC Wilmington Oct. 12. Hofstra’s Carol Leurini was charged with a yellow card for the play. The game was delayed for about 25 minutes before Matthews was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The game was part of Senior Day for the Huskies, which honored their four veterans: defender and co-captain Laura Johnson, goalie and co-captain Annie Petrofsky, midfielder Dianna Mastromauro and defender Hannah Schindler.

The seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony where they received flowers and plaques. One at a time, each senior took the field with her parents as an announcer read highlights from her career as a Husky.

Head coach Ed Matz said the seniors exemplified more than talent and hard work.

“These seniors have given me a lot on the field with too many accomplishments to name, but they’re such good kids,” he said. “To me, it’s what we’re trying to build our program into. We want the wins also, but they’re a great part of our program
