Swimming ‘ Diving: Winning steak continues

By AJ Mercincavage

The women’s swim team extended its unbeaten streak in a three-way, two-day meet against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rivals Delaware and Old Dominion.

On Friday and Saturday, the Huskies outscored UDel 194-159 and topped the Old Dominion Monarchs 205-148. Northeastern is now 5-0 on the season, including two CAA victories.

The Huskies finished first in 10 of of the meet’s 19 events and received further help from strong outside lane performances.

“Everyone has contributed to all our wins this season,” said sophomore Kathrine Fugge. “The depth of the team has been the real strength, and everyone has stepped it up for the meets.”

Fugge won three events for the Huskies, including the 200-. 100- and 50-yard freestyle. She was also a part of Northeastern’s winning 400-medley and 4×100-yard freestyle relay.

The Huskies took first and third in the 100-yard breaststroke; first, third and fourth in the 50-yard free; and first and fourth in the 100-yard free. Northeastern individual medley racers also took second and third in the 200-yard IM.

Senior Brittany Gilles, last week’s CAA Diver of the Week, and junior Courtney Flanagan made another big splash, taking first and second in one meter diving. The duo of divers also took first and fourth in the three meter diving event. Gilles remains unbeaten in both the one and three meter diving events this season.

Freshman Sarah Martin added crucial outside lane finishes for the Huskies during the sprint freestyle events. Martin placed third in the 50-yard free and fourth in the 100-yard. She was also the third leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

“The incoming freshmen add a lot of depth that we didn’t have before,” said junior breaststroker Elena Alvarez.

Alvarez captured first in the 100-yard breast and swam the breaststroke leg of Northeastern’s winning 400-yard medley.

The Huskies will ride this wave of success to their next competition, the three-day Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University Nov. 16 to 18.

“We are all excited for the Terrier Invitational,” Fugge said. “We definitely can win this invite.”
