Falling on deaf ears

The Student Government Association has spoken for those who have no voice.

A Sense of the Senate was unanimously voted on last Thursday stating that the Centralized Interpreting Budget Committee must act diligently in implimenting a Centralized Interpreting Fund to benefit the Deaf community.

Money is not the issue at hand. It is a matter of respecting and accepting the Deaf community and allowing them to participate in activities on campus.

The concept of a Centralized Interpreting Fund is not new to Northeastern; The Northeastern News as well as The Boston Globe covered the issue last spring, highlighting the frustration that Deaf students expressed.

With a centralized fund set aside soley for interpreting, Deaf students would be able to participate in numerous events on campus. Equal opportunities for all are essential.

By neglecting to solidify such a fund, the administration has turned its back on the Deaf community. If the Central Interpreting Budget Committee ignores SGA’s deadline of Oct. 31, 2002 it makes one wonder, who is next to neglected by the university?
