Husky Athletics: Players honored by CAA

By Jared Shafran

This past weekend was busy for Northeastern athletics.

Most Husky teams took a step in the right direction with wins. Volleyball kept up with the rest of the conference by winning both its games to remain in second place, football got its second win of the season, while men’s soccer clinched a spot in the playoffs for the second straight year.

In addition to winning games, players have been racking up awards. Below are a couple of our student athletes who came up big last weekend, and made a dent not only on the scoreboard, but also in the awards department.

Football: Maurice Murray Senior captain running back Maurice Murray had quite a week. The team, who had tallied only one win this season, wasn’t given much of a chance going into the game against heavily favored, then-ranked No. 8 UNH.

Murray took things into his own hands, rushing for 206 yards on 55 carries and scored three touchdowns in the win over New Hampshire. He was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Offensive Player of the Week Monday, but most recently was presented with the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Award Wednesday.

This, in addition to being one of the College Sporting News’ National Players of the Week, has capped off a busy week for Murray. He is now the school’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 39 and rushing attempts with 764. He is 215 rushing yards shy of the all-time lead with 3,477.

Volleyball: Caitlin Tittl Caitlin Tittl was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Co-Rookie of the Week this past Monday.

In the team’s two wins against UNC Wilmington and Georgia State over the weekend, Tittl totaled 27 kills and a team high 10 blocks.

The freshman middle hitter had a match high for kills against UNC Wilmington Friday, and recorded double digit kills Saturday against Georgia State. She is currently third on the team in kills with 243.

Tittl hit a .322 average over the weekend as the Huskies moved into sole possession of second place in the CAA. This season, Tittl has recorded double digits in kills in 14 matches.

The team is currently 17-12 (9-3 CAA), and has had two other members recognized by the CAA this season.

Men’s Soccer: Greg Kilkenny Senior forward Greg Kilkenny led the Huskies to multiple victories over Towson and George Mason last weekend.

Kilkenny, the team’s captain, had a goal and two assists that led him to being named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week. These victories allowed Northeastern to clinch a spot in the CAA playoffs for the second straight year.

Kilkenny now has six goals this year. He ranks second in two categories in the CAA with 21 points and nine assists on the season.

His performance on the field helped the Huskies to a 6-1-1 record in their last eight games. The team remains strong at Parsons Field, posting a 7-1 record when playing on home turf.

The senior will take to Parsons for the last time today when the team plays its final regular season match against Hofstra at 7 p.m.
