Field Hockey: Huskies recover from loss with 7-1 win

By Danielle Ossher

The field hockey team started the weekend off rough, getting shut out by Drexel 3-0 Friday. Sunday served as redemption for the Huskies, who dominated Hofstra in their 7-1 win.

“Friday was a little disappointing,” said head coach Cheryl Murtagh. “We didn’t come out aggressively. I don’t know why, but we sat back.”

Drexel came out strong Friday, netting the first goal 13 minutes into the game. Freshman forward Susan Ciufo tapped in a rebound off a pass she deflected toward the net.

Ciufo scored again in the second half off a one-timer that beat senior goaltender and captain Liz Centofanti to put Drexel up by two. The Dragons finished their scoring with a third goal off a scramble in the circle after Drexel was awarded a penalty corner.

In the game, Drexel out shot Northeastern 17-9, and had the advantage in penalty corners 6-4. Centofanti collected nine saves in the loss.

The Huskies then traveled to Hofstra, where they turned their weekend around.

“They all did their job,” Murtagh said. “It was a great team effort. To score seven goals shows we can generate offense and score.”

Sophomore defender Suzanne Hazelzet collected her first career hat trick in the team’s scoring flurry Sunday. Two of her three goals came off the two penalty strokes awarded to the Huskies in the game. Those were the Huskies’ first strokes of the season.

Redshirt freshman Meg Sweeney also tallied two goals in the win, while junior midfielder Ashley Bascetta and sophomore forward Harriet Hoyer each added one. Hazelzet also contributed in the assist category, helping out on the first goal of the game by Sweeney.

Northeastern out shot Hofstra 13-10, and the Huskies were 1-5 in penalty corners while the Pride couldn’t capitalize on any of its five chances. Centofanti, who played almost the entirety of the game, collected three saves in the win. Junior keeper Colleen Duffy relieved Centofanti in net with four minutes left in the game.

The Huskies, now 7-10 (3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) return to Sweeney Field this weekend to play their last two regular season games. Northeastern will face James Madison Friday and Virginia Commonwealth Sunday as part of Homecoming weekend, both at 2 p.m.
