Swimming ‘ Diving: Win lifts record to 2-0

By AJ Mercincavage

The swimming and diving extended its record to 2-0 Saturday, defeating the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut.

Northeastern won the opening relay event, but the Blue Devils battled right back, winning the 1000-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

“The relay team took first place, which got the meet off to a great start and we continued to fight and really give all that we had throughout the meet,” said captain Kara Lane.

Katherine Fugge had a standout performance, finishing first in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.

“She had an incredible meet, going season best times in the 100- and 200-yard free,” Lane said. “She is having an amazing start to her sophomore season.”

Elena Alvarez, Heather Whiting and Molly Curran went first, third and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke to give Northeastern its first healthy lead.

This would continue with Lane’s first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly and a competitive 2-3-5 Husky performance in the 50-yard free.

But diving would prove to be Northeastern’s ace in the hole.

“Brittany Gilles and Courtney Flanagan again proved to be the top divers of the meet,” Lane said. “[Brittany] has a lot of experience, being in her senior season, and it is really showing. I am so happy that the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) recognized her as diver of the week.”

Gilles and Courtney Flanagan finished first and second in both the one and three meter dive events. Their finish in the one-meter diving gave the Huskies a 20-point edge, and the 3-meter diving gave the team a comfortable lead going into the final two events.

Central Connecticut won both the 200-yard individual medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay, the meet’s last two events, but the push was not enough to overcome the lead created by the Husky divers.

The Huskies travel to Vermont for their next meet this Saturday at noon.
