Swimming ‘ Diving: New pool records set

By AJ Mercincavage

The swimming and diving team broke three Vermont pool records Saturday in a 165-135 win over UVM.

The Vermont squad proved competitive, breaking four pool records of its own and jumping to an early lead after winning three of the first four events.

Northeastern captured the lead after the 50-yard freestyle, finishing first, third and fifth in the sprint event to gain a two-point edge over the Catamounts.

The Huskies kept up the pressure, taking first, third and fourth in the one and three meter diving events. Senior Brittany Gilles, winner of both events, remains unbeaten this diving season.

The Catamounts crawled back into the meet, however, eventually gaining a two-point lead after the 500-yard freestyle. But Vermont fell victim to strong Husky finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, three meter diving and 200-yard individual medley.

“There has not been an easy meet where we can just relax and not worry about the competition and we’ve responded really well to that,” said junior breaststroker Alena Alvarez. “I’m really proud of our team because every point counts.”

Alvarez’s first place in the 200-yard individual medley with 2.10.06 broke the UVM pool record. She also set a UVM record in the 100-yard breaststroke with 1.07.53. Katherine Fugge rounded out the record-breaking, setting a new high mark in the 200-yard free with 1.54.79.

“After a really strong meet like that, we’re looking forward to this coming weekend when we see teams in our conference for the first time,” Lane said.

The Huskies face Colonial Athletic Association rivals Delaware and ODU Friday and Saturday at Barletta Natatorium.
