Football: Murray’s career at NU

By Maggie Cassidy

Maurice Murray’s career as a Husky came to a close Saturday, but the senior running back still has 3,809 reasons to smile.

During his four years playing on the Northeastern gridiron, Murray broke six school records in different categories, the most notable being his toppling of 2001 graduate L.J. McKanas’s record-setting 3,692 rushing yards by 117. He accomplished that feat in a 35-30 loss to Rhode Island Saturday with a 28-yard rush in the first quarter before adding 154 more.

No. 11 broke two more of McKanas’s records, both in rushing attempts: in a single game with 55 against New Hampshire Nov. 3, and over his career with 819.

Murray wrapped up with 43 touchdowns in his time as a Husky, all of them coming on runs. With those, he broke two more records: 2002 graduate Tim Gale’s 36 rushing touchdowns, and 2000 graduate Dave Klemic’s 42 career TDs.

Last, but not least, Murray finished his career with 18 games with 100 yards or more, one-upping McKanas yet again.

As if that wasn’t enough of an assault, Murray came close to breaking a few more benchmarks. This season’s 1,421 rushing yards, as well as 302 rushing attempts, are both second-most in school history behind McKanas. Also, his 14 touchdowns tie him with Gale and McKanas for most in a season by an NU tailback.

His 1,421 yards this year means he is the only NU tailback to rush for more than 1,000 yards twice in his career, as he totaled 1,061 in 2006.
