Letter to the Editor: Alumni disappointed by possible athletics cuts

As the recent story “A team’s fate in question: Athletics Department restructuring may bring program cuts,” from the Oct. 22 edition suggests that the elimination of the football program is a real possibility, I urge you, Athletics Director Peter Roby, to take into account the voices of some proud alumni.

As a graduate of Northeastern, and a former member of the football team, it is with a heavy heart that I even have to address this issue with school leaders, let alone the athletics director.

I would urge that you consider the ramifications of cancelling a proud and important aspect of any college or university. Sports, especially a football program, bring unbridled enthusiasm, school pride and togetherness to a school that other areas do not. By shining a spotlight on the athletic program it is saying to the student body that we want to enjoy the benefits of loyal and proud alumni.

Schools like Amherst, Williams, Harvard, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Boston College, etc., that Northeastern competes with for students and attention all recognize that loyal and giving alumni extend their generosity financially and show their admiration for their schools through their athletic teams; football being the leader.

I would encourage you to meet with myself and my wife, another Northeastern graduate and former volleyball player, so we can provide as much insight, history and context for you as possible.

– Christopher and Catherine Boyd are Northeastern alumni.
