Swimming and diving: Still undefeated after six meets

The swimming and diving team took its unbeaten record to Boston University’s Terrier Invitational last week and won the three-day meet, breaking three school records in the process.

The Huskies currently sit at 6-0, including two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) victories. This is the squad’s best start since the 2001-02 season, when the team went 9-0 and won the America East Championships.

The ’07 season kicked off with a nail-biting two-point victory over Boston College. But the Huskies have progressively widened their margin of victory with wins against Central Connecticut, Vermont, Delaware and Old Dominion.

Emily Sutliff toppled two Northeastern records at the invitational during the 1,650-yard freestyle. Sutliff, initially seeded sixth in the 1,650, won the mile-long event with a record-breaking time of 17:33.77.

Sutliff’s split of 10:23.37 after 40 laps broke the Northeastern 1,000-yard freestyle record.

“Emily pulled away to finish off the race like a rock star,” Alvarez said. “That’s 66 laps of pain and she kept on building up speed, which is so hard. It was really inspirational. This whole meet was.”

Further inspiration came during the second day’s final event, the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Husky A-relay of Sarah Martin, Lauren Williams, Emily Sutliff and Fugge was in seventh place going into the fourth and final leg. But anchor Fugge fought to finish third in the event.
