The swimming and diving team continued its dominance Saturday, beating both Boston University and New Hampshire in a double duel meet hosted by BU. In that meet, sophomore Kathrine Fugge placed first in the 50 freestyle, second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. This performance earned her this week’s Northeastern News Player of the Week honors.
The team has quietly been flying under the radar and is still undefeated with only one meet remaining in the season.
“It has been very exciting so far,” Fugge said. “UNH was also undefeated and BU was a big rival so it was nice to get those wins.”
The last time the team was undefeated so late in the season was in 2001-02, when they finished unbeaten and took home the America East Championship.
At 9-0 this season, all that remains is a home meet against Dartmouth Feb. 9, but the Huskies are trying not to look too far ahead and know their perfect season is not yet complete.
“Last year we lost against Dartmouth but we are confident that we can win this year,” Fugge said. “The home advantage will definitely help us this time around.”
In the classroom, Fugge is an economics major. She recently switched from international affairs and hopes this major will suit her better.
Coming from the small town of Farmington, Conn., Fugge said she loves being in Boston for college.
“I knew that I wanted to be in the city and did not want to be at a school that was in the middle of nowhere,” Fugge said.
In high school, Fugge was a four-year member of her varsity team. She was named All-American three years in the 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 IM, setting six different school records in the process.
When she is at home, she spends most of her time hanging out with friends and family like other college athletes. She enjoys her time off because she has so little of it but still tries to work out and keep in shape as much as possible.
“The city is really exciting,” Fugge said. “There’s always stuff going on and I love to walk around and go shopping.”
As for her team, Fugge said the get along well with each other.
“We are a very competitive team and that brings us our success [in the pool],” she said.
Next season should bring some new recruits who are rumored to be pretty good and Fugge is looking forward to having another successful campaign.
After the meet against Dartmouth, the Huskies will bring their best to the Colonial Athletic Association championships, held at George Mason.
“Last year I did not do too well at the championships, so I am looking to perform better this time around,” Fugge said.
