Shannon O’Brien will not be the first female in Massachusetts history elected to the governor’s office.
Going into Tuesday’s election, Republican candidate Mitt Romney and Democratic candidate O’Brien both stated the election would be one of the closest in years.
Today, Governor Elect Mitt Romney will spend his first day knowing he won the Massachusetts election much easier than anticipated.
As of press time Tuesday night, and with over 80 percent of the precincts reporting, Romney held 51 percent of the votes to O’Brien’s 44.
After the polls closed, O’Brien waited three hours and then conceded defeat.
The 2002 Massachusetts campaign was highlighted, not by the issues which seemingly took a back seat, but by mudslinging as both candidates published numerous scathing television advertisements that littered prime time TV.
Romney entered the race for governor last March and instantaneously gained popularity despite the Democrats’ claim that their party is the strongest and most united it has been in 20 years.
Democratic candidate Tim Cahill held a strong lead at press time for state treasurer and bilingual education was eliminated after 30 years as voters approved the idea of replacing it with English immersion.
