The Roc-a-fella has finally done it. With movies like the hip-hop documentary, “Backstage,” and the ghetto fabulous “State Property,” Damon Dash has proven he has what it takes to produce a tale from the hood.
“Paid in Full” is based on events in the lives of drug lords Alpo, A.Z. and Rich Porter. Set in the mid-80s, when thick rope gold chains and Reebok classics were the must haves, and hustlers owned the streets. The film’s main character, Ace (Wood Harris, “Remember the Titans” and HBO’s “The Wire”), is the do-right man who is trying to make ends meet by working at the local cleaners owned by Pip, (Chi McBride) making $75 a week. While his best friend, Mitch (Mekhi Phifer), is admired by the neighborhood groupies and gangsters and drives around Harlem in the latest European automobiles.
Things start to change when Calvin (Kevin Carroll) takes a trip to the local penitentiary. With no one left to work the block, Ace is thrown into the fast lane when he finds cocaine in the laundry of one of his customers and decides to sell it. From that point on, Ace changes from the awkward boy to
