As college students, we are usually looking for fun things to do, especially if they are free.
While reading the Boston Metro, students may have noticed free movie passes in the paper. These promotions are for films that have yet to be released. This special promotion allows readers of the Metro to get a sneak peak of a new movie that is coming out, before the general public has a chance to view it. These aren’t the crappy, trite movies that no one wants to see. Most recently, the Metro has featured such films as, “Punch-Drunk Love” starring Adam Sandler, “Red Dragon,” with the legendary Anthony Hopkins, “Brown Sugar,” starring Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs, as well as “Paid in Full,” with Cam’ron, Wood Harris and Mekhi Phifer, just to name a few.
With this promotion, readers are instructed to go to a designated store at a certain time, usually 11 a.m., to pick up their free passes. In the past, these stores included Borders, Footpaths and HMV.
“The promotional ad runs for one day, and, typically, the movie is screened the following night,” said Amanda Lang, sales representative for Boston Metro. Advertisers especially enjoy the benefits that come along with giving out these free passes.
“They enjoy it because it is something that we offer to our readers, and it brings a lot of foot traffic into our advertisers’ businesses,” said Lang.
This promotional offer is not new to the Metro; it has been in effect for over a year now.
“We run the promotional ads whenever Allied (an advertising agency) sends us the info about the movie, and if it is a good fit for our audience, we will run the ad,” said Lang.
With movie prices as much as $10 per ticket, free movie passes are a great way to get out and see the latest feature without having to worry about the cost.
