From extreme stimulation to coma-like effects, narcotics affect the brain and body in different ways. Although many should not be consumed, others, like caffeine, can be beneficial when used in moderation, said Norman Boisse, a Northeastern associate pharmacology professor, which is good since many students consume it.
Caffeine, a natural stimulant, is found in many foods and beverages, and provides the user with effects ranging from increased alertness to agitation and feeling jittery, Boisse said.
