NU sees jump in applicant pool for fall semester More than 35,000 students applied to Northeastern for the class of 2013, according to a Northeastern announcement. With an expanded presence both nationally and overseas, Northeastern has seen a 16 percent increase in the applicant pool during the last year and a 64 percent increase during the last five years. There has been a dramatic increase of applicants from the Mid-Atlantic and West Coast, as well as an increase in the number of international students who have applied. The number of African American and Hispanic applicants has increased 143 percent and 52 percent during the last 10 years, respectively. Other efforts have added to this increase in applicants: an expansion in Northeastern’s regional presence, with four recruiters located in strategic centers throughout the United States; alumni volunteers overseas; more strategic marketing and communication on the heels of the branding campaign launched in 2002; increase in target marketing; increased travel throughout the United States and abroad; a 13 percent increase in visits to high schools (visiting more than 950 high schools this year); and effectively using alumni in outreach efforts through the Alumni Volunteer Program, according to the announcement. In coming weeks, the admissions committee will meet to review applications and make decisions regarding the university’s 111th entering class. Decisions will be made online by April 1. – Michele Richinick, News Staff
