Adam Spang’s opinion on global warming, as a political science major, is about as relevant as Anne Coulter’s thoughts on how to be a decent human being (she is the devil). But what upset me is Spang’s motivation for writing the letter. It was obvious to anyone who read the letter, “Fee just something else to overlook” (Jan. 4), that his ultimate goal was hippy bashing using a rather weak argument that people might forget to uncheck a box. The idea that a person could accidentally contribute $30 to a foundation concentrating on improving energy efficiency and hopefully improving the standard of living for future generations is quite horrifying indeed. It is true that the Earth is warming and that this has been a frequent occurrence since the beginning of time. What people seem to be misunderstanding is it’s not that the world is getting warmer, but how fast it is increasing in temperature. If the world continues to increase in temperature at this rate (emphasis on rate) there will be devastating consequences. While having to use SPF 30 instead of SPF 15 is not really a big deal, sending Europe into an ice age seems to be a little bit disconcerting. Something about a whole continent struggling to grow food in soil that refuses to thaw, because a hippy supported the cause, just doesn’t tickle me the right way. Oil supplies are not bottomless. There have been reports that the world’s oil supply will drop significantly by the year 2016. This shows the Husky Energy Action Team’s (HEAT) motivation to improve the university’s energy efficiency now is a reasonable reaction to anyone who understands the seriousness of the situation. Now Spang, I’m sorry to have dropped so much knowledge on you, and your hatred of hippies is understandable. If I see one more drum circle filled with those “organic tofu” eating hippies I might just cry. But to downplay what is a serious issue because some hippies might be involved in the solution is very narrow-minded. Spang, I would like to encourage you to do a little bit of research into Bush/Cheney’s relationship with oil companies, and maybe you’ll understand why “the consequences are still being sorted out.” And, congratulations on fulfilling the stereotype of an intolerant, insensitive Republican. I hope you continue sitting in your ivory tower hurling insults at an organization hoping to improve the world for your future children. – Brendan Crawford is a senior mechanical engineering major.
