Journalists address the press

While it would be preferable to make the United States’ efforts in Afghanistan a humanitarian cause, America’s underlying intention is to maintain its own vested political interest in the country as a rich source of oil.

So said the panelists of the Ford Hall Forum on Thursday Nov. 4, at the Raytheon Amphitheater. Three journalists came together to examine a pertinent issue: “Afghanistan and Freedom of the Press in the United States.”

The experts on the issue were journalists Paul Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Gould, and Bob Zelnick, with Christopher Lydon acting as moderator. Fitzgerald and Gould are husband and wife, and have spent much time in Afghanistan. They were the first American reporters allowed behind the borders of soviet Afghanistan in 1981.
