Brian Tudrick scored halfway through the first period and Keni Gibson made one spectacular save after another as the Huskies dropped Providence, 4-3 in front of 3,031 fans at Matthews Arena.
Tudrick skated down the ice and flipped a backhander past PC netminder Nolan Schaffer to give the Huskies the one goal advantage.
“I cut inside then outside and somehow put it in the net,” said Tudrick.
At the 8:51 mark of the third period, Gibson made the save of his brief Northeastern career when, after a wrist shot in front of the net, Gibson made an initial stop. The puck bounced out in front of the goal, Gibson lost his stick, then flipped around and made a spectacular swat save.
“I swung my glove at it and it hit the cross bar and went out,” Gibson said. “They were tough tonight and much faster around the net then any team we’ve faced.”
Mike Ryan scored a pair of goals and pulled NU even after Providence had taken a 3-2 lead. NU had built a 2-0 early in the first period on goals by Ryan and defenseman Donny Grover who scored from a near impossible angle behind the net.
