Culture and style go hand in hand;, one influences the other. The lifestyle choices and backgrounds make up how we look at ourselves and how we look at other people.
Clothing from different cultures are a definite influence on the American scene, and vice versa. We exchange ideas between cultures through television, film, and especially through the many visiting cultures that live together in different communities.
Freshman communications major Sruti Devendradesai is Indian, but was born and raised in Matawan, New Jersey.
The Northeastern News: Does the fashion scene at Northeastern spark any interest or inspiration for you?
Sruti Devendradesai: I think it is a little snobby, everyone is rich. Everything is Gucci, Prada and Coach and I can’t afford it. I’m not going along with it. I personally think it’s ugly, old lady clothes. I don’t think I would waste money on [expensive trends] even if I had money for it.
The News: What kind of clothes do you like to buy?
Devendradesai: I like to wear tight shirts, because I’m skinny and do not have big boobs, so I like stuff that accentuates my body.
The News: Does the shopping scene suit your style?
Devendradesai: No, I definitely prefer style back in Jersey.
The News: You are of Indian decent, but grew up in Jersey, do those two cultures influence the way you dress?
Devendradesai: The Indian culture influences my doing the bare midriff trend. Indian jewelry is an obsession of mine as well. Jersey does not have a personal style; everything is relaxed. There are a lot of punks and ghetto kids. I’m kinda meshed in between.
The News: When you shop, is it easy to find what you are looking for?
Devendradesai: I really do not have a style, but when I shop and enter a store, I know what I want and get it.
The News: If you could have one piece of clothing or jewelry, what would it be?
Devendradesai: An onyx and diamond choker.
