The Maine Black Bears used six second period goals and two more in the first to knock off Northeastern, 8-2 in front of 3,027 fans at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies, who fell to 2-6-1 on the season (1-4-1 Hockey East) were down 2-0 after the first period before the flood gates opened up.
The Huskies allowed six goals, two shorthanded and two to Lucas Lawson who missed most of the first period with a wrist injury, scored two of their own and didn’t score when Mike Ryan was awarded a penalty shot. NU also used all three of their netminders in the middle frame.
“That was a crazy period,” Maine coach Tim Whitehead said after the game. “We hadn’t won down here in our last six contests so this was a good win to get.”
The Huskies fell behind 5-0 before they were able to get on the board when Eric Ortlip plugged home a Jason Guerriero rebound. Maine scored right after that and Northeastern, literally scored right after Maine. All in all, in a span of 1:29, four goals were scored.
NU coach Bruce Crowder pulled Keni Gibson after the Black Bears’ fourth goal and brought in senior Mike Gilhooly who made just one save in four opportunities allowed freshman Tim Heneroty to play the last 10 minutes of the second period and all of the third.
“A credit to Maine. They took it to us,” said Crowder. “They’re a good hockey team.”
Gibson disagreed.
“I don’t think they’re all that special. We just crapped the bed tonight,” he said. “We’ve got to work on the little things for BC next week. Play our game and we’ll be alright.”
