He’d never seen anything like it.
He cautioned his team not to overlook Northeastern. He told his troops to get to BU the following night, but even this was too good to be true.
Maine coach Tim Whitehead and his Maine Black Bears took out Boston this weekend, beating Northeastern into submission, 8-2 and then knocking off BU the next night, 7-3.
Northeastern was the victim of a difficult second period where Maine scored six goals, NU went through three goalies and Mike Ryan was unable to connect on a penalty shot with NU trailing 5-1.
“They put us away,” NU coach Bruce Crowder said. “I give them a lot of credit. They’re a good hockey team.”
NU goalie Keni Gibson disagreed.
“We crapped the bed tonight,” said Gibson who was removed from net just three minutes into the second period. “I don’t think they’re that special, we just got beat tonight. They took it to us.”
Maine and NU combined early in the second period to score a total of four goals within a 1:29. No scoring was done in the third period.
Just how bad was it for Northeastern? The Huskies scored two goals. Maine’s Lucas Lawson scored two goals after he left in the first period after injuring his right wrist. Lawson would score Maine’s third goal which proved to be the game winning goal. Maine scored two special teams goals. They were both shorthanded and both in the second period.
“That was a crazy period,” said Whitehead. “I told my guys, ‘we’re 0-3-2 in our last five games here. We can’t look past them.’ They’ve played some good games. They tied UNH and beat Providence, so they play really well here.”
Maine scored a pair in the first period to go ahead 2-0 entering the dreadful second period. After five minutes, the Huskies found themselves down 5-0.
Mike Gilhooly replaced Gibson in net, but after allowing three goals on his first four shots, Gilhooly was replaced by freshman Tim Heneroty who subsequently allowed a goal on his first shot only to turn away the next 19 he faced.
Howard, who held the Maine record for most consecutive minutes without a goal allowed, lost that streak when Eric Ortlip banged home a rebound in front on an NU power play to make it 5-1.
With the Huskies trailing, 5-1, Ryan had the opportunity to bring NU within three when he was awarded a penalty shot. He skated in on freshman Jimmy Howard, but Howard read the play and Ryan was stoned by a blocker save on a wrist shot from the far side.
Maine scored 11 seconds after Ortlip’s goal and NU scored 11 seconds after Maine did.
