The women’s basketball team did not disappoint in their first ever season opener at Matthews arena.
Spurred by the deadly sharpshooting of freshman guard Maralene Zwarich (17 points) and some excellent all-around play by junior point guard Aisha Williams, the Huskies won their first game of the season in a rout, defeating Central Connecticut State 62-29 on Friday.
After CCSU scored the first basket, NU went on a 16-0 run, spurred by Williams, who had five points in the opening surge. The Blue Devils simply could not score, starting 1-17 from the floor. The Huskies took a 32-11 lead into the half, holding Central Connecticut to 4-27 shooting from the field.
There would be no second-half Husky collapse on this night. A 14-6 push swelled the score to 46-17 with 12:03 remaining. The 33 point margin at the final was also their largest lead of the evening.
An aggressive Huskies defense held the Blue Devils to only 19 percent shooting, posting a horrendous 11-57 mark from the field. Northeastern, on the other hand, was able to maintain some consistency while out on the floor, shooting 21-50 from the floor with a 46 percent mark from three point range.
