The football team had a lot to deal with this season, from a frustrating 1-7 start to rumors of the program’s demise. But on Nov. 3 at Cowell Stadium in New Hampshire, none of that mattered. The Huskies rolled into Durham to face the then-ranked No. 8 Wildcats and executed a convincing 31-13 victory.
“It was probably the most dominating football game I’ve ever played in,” said junior quarterback Anthony Orio. “We had the ball the whole game, the time of possession was like 4:1 or something crazy like that.”
The Huskies managed the ball on offense for 48:13 to the Wildcats’ paltry 11:47. Senior running back Maurice Murray ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Orio was nearly perfect, completing 11 of 12 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown as well. Four players caught at least two passes for 25 yards.
Northeastern was equally as dominant on defense that day, causing three New Hampshire turnovers (two interceptions and a forced fumble) while allowing only 13 points on 270 total yards of offense. Even more impressively, all of this came against a Wildcat offense that averaged 35.8 points and 407.2 yards of total offense per game in 2007.
For at least one day, the Huskies came together in 2007 and put the nonsense behind them to prove that, at their best, they were as good as any other team.
“It was just a good team win,” Orio said.
