On Feb. 17, the Huskies traveled to William ‘ Mary and pulled out a close 65-64 victory, turning their season around and sparking a six game winning streak to end the season that earned them the sixth overall seed for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tourney.
The Huskies extended that winning streak one more game with a 78-46 manhandling of George Mason in the tournament’s opening round before barely being beaten by Virginia Commonwealth in the second round, 51-50.
Those seven games where Northeastern couldn’t be beat proved to be the highlight of the year for the team, who came together to pull out consecutive victories against four different CAA opponents.
“It felt good. We were all finally on the same page and a winning streak felt good,” said senior guard Shaleyse Smallwood. “It brightened everything up, everyone was happy.”
The streak brought the Huskies out of the CAA basement, where they were at 2-10, to sixth in the conference at 8-10. Overall they improved to finish the season 14-16, a 10 win improvement over 2006-2007.
Ultimately the winning streak proved that the women’s basketball team could hang tough in the CAA, and from Feb. 17 to March 13, at least, no team was better than the Huskies.
