Like a boomerang, fashion trends often disappear only to return some years later. This year, high-waisted jeans have made a comeback.
Gracing the fashion scene in the ’50s and gaining sex appeal in the ’70s, high-waisted pants have changed only slightly to fit into the 21st century. Instead of the disco era’s high-waisted bell-bottoms, most high-waisted pants today have an A-line silhouette or skinny jeans fit.
High-waisted pants have gained attention with celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Ciara and Mischa Barton rocking them. The trend took off even more as women began to realize their magic – once on, they give you a flatter tummy and longer legs.
“I think they do look nice,” said Alexandra Cote, a freshman pharmacy major. “My roommate really likes them. She says they make her look thin.”
But not every fashion magic trick is perfect. While lengthening your legs, high-waisted jeans may also lengthen or widen your butt. Many fashion critics have also stated, more often than not, they create the look of “mom jeans,” or pants that sit too high on the waist, and are too tapered and too tight in all the wrong places.
“I don’t know if I’d wear them, but if I did, it would be more so as dress pants,” said Lauren Diore, a freshman pharmacy major.
While the trend’s fashionability may be debated between critics and students, many have given thanks to the trend’s attempt to cover up girls’ navels and thongs.
