In this year’s polls, one local business reigned over not one, but two Best of NU categories. Cappy’s Pizza ‘ Subs took best delivery and best pizza, conquering six other businesses for the titles.
Cappy’s is a local business that has been around for more than 30 years with locations throughout Boston, the closest at 309 Huntington Ave.
“My parents have had it since about 1970 or 1975,” said Demetri Bseudoikonomou, who started running Cappy’s after he graduated from Northeastern, where he studied economics.
He said the most important aspect to drawing in customers and keeping them faithful is the quality of the service, as well as the price.
“I make fresh dough every single day,” he said. “I have a slice of cheese for $2.50, but it’s almost double the size of say BHOP (Boston House of Pizza), who sells it for $2.”
If you take a look at the Cappy’s menu, their options range from breakfast to seafood, salads and burgers, and of course, their specialty: a wide variety of pizza and subs.
“Our pizza is huge. If you get a slice, it’s going to be really big and it’s going to be really good,” Bseudoikonomou said. “It’s not like we use cheap cheese and cheap dough, like some other stores use. It’s really good food. And a lot of people ask us about our hot sauce, but I’ll never tell our secret. I mix it up with a couple of things. It’s just a recipe, like everybody’s grandmother has a recipe about something, I just have a recipe about sauces.”
Cappy’s seems to draw students not only for the food, prices and size of the pizza slices, but also with it’s convenient location.
Cappy’s is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., hours that seem to be ideal for the college crowd.
“We talk to the customers. We’re also in our 20s so we can easily talk to some of the kids, and we fool around,” Bseudoikonomou said. “They’re like, we crack them up, we make them laugh.”
Since Bseudoikonomou began managing the restaurant, he’s not only expanded the services Cappy’s offers, like online ordering (which started in 2003), but he’s opened up stores throughout the state and is hoping to open more.
“To me, Cappy’s is still the same as it always was because I’m here every single day. But I guess we just get bigger and better all the time,” Bseudoikonomou said. “But the quality and service speak for themselves, and that’s why we’re No. 1.”
