For the field hockey team, 2007 brought epic overtime wins and rough losses, comprising an overall less-than-successful season for the usually dominate team.
However, amidst the ping-pong schedule of wins and loses, the team pulled out an impressive weekend in October with two upsets.
After a loss Oct. 3 to Harvard, the Huskies played host to the then No. 18 Delaware Oct. 5 and Towson Oct. 7. With two conference wins notched and two more necessary to ensure a trip to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, Northeastern was looking for victories over both teams to seal its trip and give the team a needed boost.
In a tight contest Oct. 5 that saw goals in only the second half, the Huskies came away with the upset over Delaware, topping them 2-1 at Sweeney Field. A defensively charged game saw only nine Northeastern shots and 11 from Delaware. However, capitalizing on their chances, the Huskies hit the back of the net in the second to break the tie at one and take the game.
“I remember that was a really huge win, and that gave us so much confidence going into that Sunday game that it would have been tough to beat us,” said senior goaltender Liz Centofanti. “I just remember that whole weekend was really a great weekend for our team and obviously making it to the CAA was a huge goal for our team. It was one of our season goals that we accomplished so that was great too.”
The win against Delaware gave the Huskies the boost they had been looking for and they went on to defeat Towson that Sunday 3-2. Senior forward Stephanie Casper netted her first two goals of the season in the match, and Northeastern collected its fourth conference win, sending them to the CAA Tournament.
The team finished its season in the semifinal round of the tournament for the second year in row, as they got shut out by Old Dominion 3-0 and sported a 9-12 (5-5 CAA) record on the season.
