Finally, the wait to see the red lamp light up is over.
After a dreadful spell which lasted over one hundred minutes (105:53), the Huskies scored four goals and beat up on a pesky Union team, 4-2 in front of 1,121 at Matthews Arena.
NU, trailing going into the third period 1-0, got two goals from Mike Ryan, a game winner from Brian Tudrick and some nifty goaltending late from Keni Gibson to edge Union.
“I told the guys after the second period that we have to work as a team,” Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder said. “We had too many guys trying to win the game on their own.”
NU finally got on the board in the third when Trevor Reschny intercepted a pass at the Union blue line and skated in on Kris Mayotte. The initial wrister was stopped but Reschny had the presence of mind to hold his balance and release a second shot that was buried shortly before the junior forward went crashing into the net.
The Huskies took their first lead since the Clarkson game as Ryan re-directed a Joe Mastronardi slap shot which went off of Mayotte’s stick and slid in.
Union got one back when Matt Blabac intercepted a pass in front of Gibson and ripped a wrister over Gibson’s shoulder.
But NU was too much and Tudrick got his second game winner of the season when he took a bouncing puck out from behind the net and skated in front of Mayotte, beating him to the far side.
Ryan would add an empty netter to seal the victory with seven seconds remaining.
“I thought the guys did a lot of what they did against Merrimack in those first two periods,” said Crowder. “We had some great chances, played pretty solid hockey and then were beat. We got going in the third period tonight. I give the guys credit for staying the course.”
Game notes: Jaron Harriman and Ryan Dudgeon continue to sit. Crowder acknowledged the absence as a coach’s decision … Eric Ortlip is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a seperated shoulder. According to Crowder, the injury is similar to the one Crowder sustained in his NHL playing days in that it won’t require immediate surgery.
“It will be a nice bump on his shoulder for a while which will probably eliminate any modeling chances Eric had,” Crowder said. Ortlip will see a team p of physicians in his home of St. Louis during the two week break.
