With three games down, the men’s soccer team has already checked off each of the possible outcomes in a match, going 1-1-1 as they’ve traveled the road through Louisville, Butler and Fairfield.
The Huskies began play Aug. 30 in Louisville, Ky. with a strong showing in a 1-1 tie against the No. 23 nationally ranked Louisville Cardinals. Northeastern fell to Butler 2-0 two days later at the conclusion of the weekend-long Louisville Tournament before rebounding Monday night with a 2-1 win over Fairfield for its first victory of the season.
“The good news is that the games were all on the road,” said head coach Brian Ainscough. “Typically we haven’t done a great job on the road. We tied a really good team who was No. 23 in the country in Louisville, then got an away win against Fairfield, who were in the NCAAs last year.”
Senior forward Lewis Ehrlich has stood out for NU, scoring two of the team’s three goals so far. Ainscough said he expects Ehrlich to be one of the teams top players this season if he can avoid the health problems that plagued him throughout last year.
“He had a lot of injuries and didn’t get really going until late in the season [last year]. If we can get a full season from him, we expect him to be a big contributor,” Ainscough said.
The Louisville game was brought to a tie by Ehrlich’s goal 30 seconds after the Cardinals struck first in the 20th minute. Junior keeper Scott Partridge made eight stops in the contest, and made another seven against Butler in the losing effort. Ehrlich and junior midfielder Lars Okland were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Huskies managed to earn a win in their third game of the season as sophomore midfielder Matt Pentkowski scored the game-winner in the 77th minute. Sophomore defenseman Petur Vidarsson assisted on the score. Ehrlich notched NU’s first goal in the first half.
Ainscough said he was pleased with the team’s early results , despite missing a couple key contributors in junior defensemen Brendan Ennis and Matthew Laning to injury. He said he was impressed by the first showings of freshman forward Mike Kennedy and the emergence of Partridge.
“Mike Kennedy up front has been doing great work, even though he hasn’t put the ball in the net yet,” he said. “To come in as a freshman and play as a forward, it’s a difficult spot to play. He’s done a good job. He’s one to look out for.”
The Huskies play at Holy Cross Saturday at 7 p.m.
