Upon recently reading that Jack Grinold had donated $1 million to Northeastern’s athletics program, I felt compelled to write in and describe my true admiration for the man. (“Grinold donates $1M,” May 21)
As a former editor-in-chief at The News, and frequent reporter for hockey and football, I always remember Jack being the same. He is the ambassador of Northeastern. There’s no one like him. Every member of press row would often be greeted with a big smile, a huge hello of recognition and shown to his or her seat. I was with The News and was working around Boston Globe and Associated Press representatives, but it didn’t matter to Jack. If you were visiting the Northeastern press box, you were a friend of Mr. Grinold.
I remember vividly trotting to his office at Matthews Arena to pick up media guides. As I’m sure he is now, he was always quick with a joke, a good story and a welcoming spirit. It did not surprise me, nor should it suprise anyone else, that Jack Grinold donated that money to his work of 46 years. Jack embodies the spirit that is Northeastern.
For the five years I got to know him, I am truly grateful. Thank you, Jack – for everything you do.
