Northeastern continued its Hockey East struggles Saturday night dropping a 4-0 loss to Boston University at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies, who haven’t scored a Hockey East goal in over a month, increased their scoreless streak to 169:58 and were unable to stop senior Brian Collins who scored two goals to help the Terriers. Collins has scored eight goals in 13 games against the Huskies in his career.
“Maybe I like this rink,” said Collins with a smile. “I didn’t realize I’d scored that many.”
Boston University coach Jack Parker agreed that his senior assistant captain picked up the pace.
“I thought it was one of our better games all year,” Parker said. “Brian played real well tonight and our defense did an excellent job. We didn’t make any silly mistakes and costly penalties. This was a good win for us.”
Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder sighted a few bright spots for a Husky team that entered the tunnel after the game with their heads down.
“That first period, we didn’t play a darn,” said Crowder. “But I thought they gradually played better throughout the game. The good thing is we don’t have to wait a week to play, we get to do it all over again tomorrow night.”
NU goalie Keni Gibson, who made one big save after another, thought if the early NU chances had been converted, the outcome might have been different.
“We need to get on the board early,” said Gibson. “We had some early chances. I think we’re getting a little frustrated. I know none of the guys are saying it, but I’m thinking it. I’m not afriad of any team in Hockey East, we just need to get some momentum early. We’ve got some guys that can score. We just have to convert some of those chances.”
Parker agreed.
“We took their crowd out of it tonight,” he said. “If they had converted on one of those opportunities, it would have been loud in here.”
