The Huskies traveled to Maine Friday, and played the Black Bears to a scoreless draw in double-overtime, their second draw in a row.
Junior keeper Scott Partridge made seven saves in the shutout effort, and the Huskies managed to send 21 shots toward the Maine net to no avail.
Northeastern head coach Brian Ainscough said he thought the team did a solid job of creating offensive opportunities, but was disappointed they weren’t converted into goals against a team he felt his club should have beaten.
“We came out a little bit flat,” he said. “We’re very disappointed we didn’t get a win from that game. We felt we did enough to win the game.”
Ainscough said he thought the volume of shots the Huskies created were a sign the offense was close to turning the corner.
“The number one thing is at least you’re creating the chances, and hopefully the goals come from them,” he said. “It’s tough, but you just have to keep plucking away and hope those chances go in. I’d be more depressed if we weren’t creating the chances.”
Partridge’s seven saves gave him 33 on the season, and the shut out – his second-lowered his goals against average to 1.05. Partridge said he felt his defense had played a strong game in front of him, and that the offense had done a good job of creating pressure as well.
“We’re disappointed from Maine. “We feel that we should have won that game,” he said. “But as a defense we’re very happy with that game. And offensive we got shots, seven shots isn’t bad. We just have to keep working, keep getting those shots, and things will happen.”
Junior midfielder Alexander Volk led the Husky offensive effort with five shots, while senior forward Lewis Ehrlich and sophomore defenseman Petur Vidarsson each put two shots on goal. The Huskies’ 21 shots were eight more than Maine’s, and Northeastern took 15 corner kicks to the Black Bears’ seven.
The Huskies nearly scored on Maine (2-4-1) in the first half when Ehrlich found an opportunity in the box. Maine sent a header over the crossbar in overtime which nearly broke the tie as well.
The Huskies (1-2-3) will take on Boston University in their next match Tuesday at Parsons Field at 2 p.m.
