In its second-to-last home game of the season, the Northeastern volleyball team (10-14, 8-8 CAA) beat the Campbell Camels (6-20, 4-12 CAA) in four sets Nov. 9 during the alumni game.
Scoring opened up with an attack error by Campbell’s freshman outside hitter Victoria Tupy that was followed by a service error from Northeastern’s senior outside hitter Sahitya Krishnamurthy. Both teams tacked on a point each to bring it to 2-2 until sophomore middle blocker Beatrice Gennari had back-to-back kills to put Northeastern up 4-2.
An attack error by Northeastern brought the score to 4-3 before the Huskies went on a five-point run, complete with an ace by redshirt junior outside hitter Kinley Gomez and two kills by graduate student middle blocker Georgia Stavrinides.
With the Huskies up 9-3, the Camels called a timeout to try and collect themselves. Out of the timeout, an attack by Stavrinides gave Campbell control of serving, but Stavrinides took it right back with a kill, followed by another kill from freshman outside hitter Brynn Smith to keep the Huskies up 11-4.
Both teams exchanged service errors and kills before Campbell cut the lead down to four, courtesy of kills by freshman middle blocker Hailey Heytvelt and junior outside hitter Gwen Wolkow and an ace by sophomore defensive specialist Olivia Miller to bring the score to 13-9.
After a service error by Miller, both teams added a kill, and freshman setter Gabby Reeves aced to increase the Huskies’ lead to six with a score of 16-10. An accidental touch on a ball that was going out of bounds, a kill by Gennari and an attack error on Campbell’s part brought the Huskies lead to 18-11 before Campbell used their final timeout of the set.
Out of the timeout, Northeastern struck first with a block by Stavrinides after intense back-and-forth action close to the net on both sides. A kill by Wolkow and serves out of bounds from both teams brought the score to 20-13.
Campbell got a block off Stavrinides, but Smith answered back with a kill. After another powerful block by Campbell, Smith was there again with a kill to regain serving for Northeastern. A huge block by Gomez and graduate middle hitter Millie Loehr brought the energy high in Cabot. While a kill by redshirt senior right side hitter Emily Campe for Campbell put a slight damper on the energy, it was not enough to bring the Huskies down.
Miller suffered a service error to bring it to set point, and a dominating kill by Loehr won the Huskies the first set swiftly, 25-16.
Northeastern struck fast in the second set, earning the first point off an ace by graduate student setter Carly Cooper. The Huskies tacked on two more with a kill by Stavrinides and an attack error by Campbell before a kill by junior middle blocker Aley Clent gave the Camels their first point.
With the score 3-1, the Camels added on two points to tie the score, a result of costly attack errors by Northeastern. The teams exchanged points before Campbell went on a three-point run with an ace by junior setter Maddie Converse and kills by Heytvelt and Tupy to bring the score to 7-4.
Gomez managed to add a kill, but Campbell again went on a three-point run until Northeastern took a timeout with the set score 10-5. Both teams went back and forth until Campbell went on a four-point run to bring it to 15-7. It seemed that the teams had swapped roles from the last set. Northeastern was making costly mistakes, and Campbell was not letting things go.
Northeastern ended Campbell’s point streak with a kill by Stavrinides, but the Camels answered with another. Northeastern added two points off a service error and a block by Stavrinides and Loehr before a kill by freshman middle blocker Maddie Lambers snapped the Huskies’ run. Northeastern added two more, but the Camels did not hesitate to respond with a three-point streak to bring the set to 20-12, forcing the Huskies to use their last time out.
Gomez docked a kill out of the timeout before a Husky attack error. The teams again exchanged kills. With a sign of hope, the Huskies went on a three-point streak to keep the set going, complete with a block by Stavrinides and Gennari and kills by Gennari and junior libero Nadia Koanui. Campbell, feeling their lead beginning to slip, took a timeout as their lead dwindled from eight points to five.
With the set score 22-17, Campbell came out of their timeout ready to bring home the set. Tupy scored a kill and although a service error cost the Camels serving, two silencing kills by Lambers gave the set to the Camels, 25-18.
With the sets now tied, Northeastern was quickly looking to get back on top. A kill by Smith and an attack error by Campbell put the Huskies up 2-0 early. Campbell had a kill, a service error and another kill to leave them behind the Huskies 3-2, but an attack error by Gomez tied it up. Two kills by Campbell brought the set to 5-3. A kill by Gomez was answered with a block, and both teams exchanged kills once again.
An attack error by Tupy, a kill by Smith and an ace by Koanui allowed the Huskies to regain control of the lead, 8-7. The teams fought for control of the lead with the lead team changing four times until the Huskies went on a four point run, including two impressive kills by Smith, to put them back in control with the score of 13-10.
The back-and-forth continued until a kill by Campbell and two aces by Wolkow brought the score to 15-15, but the Huskies weren’t going to stop there. They quickly came back, capitalizing on a service error by Wolkow and earning an ace by Gomez and a kill by Stavrinides.
Campbell took a timeout that seemed to set them up for success as they came out quickly scoring twice, but the Huskies were relentless. A costly service error by Heytvelt set Northeastern up for success, and it was unstoppable the rest of the set. The Huskies scored two more, and even though Campbell took another time out, trying to recollect themselves and play as they had in the last set, it wasn’t enough. The Huskies didn’t give a point the rest of the set, taking the set victory 25-17.
The Huskies were riding high after such a dominating streak at the end of the third set and quickly looked to end the game in a four-set victory. A block by Stavrinides and Loehr and an ace by Cooper put the Huskies up 2-0 to begin the fourth set. Both teams exchanged kills, and a block by Loehr and Smith and an attack error on Campbell’s part put Northeastern up 5-1, forcing Campbell early to use a timeout.
Out of the timeout, points were exchanged by both teams before two kills by Gomez, an ace by Smith and a kill by Gennari put the Huskies up to a commanding 10-2 lead.
The point exchange continued as the Huskies stayed ahead. With the score 12-5, Clent and Stavrinides exchanged blocks and kills twice to bring the set to 14-7 Huskies. Campbell added two points off attack errors by Northeastern, but the Huskies quickly added two to maintain their lead once again.
Campbell used their final timeout with the score 16-9, seeming that their chances of victory were slipping away if they did not change it up. The even exchanges continued until the Huskies put up three points, including two kills by Stavrinides in her 13-kill performance, to bring the score to 23-14.
An attack error by Northeastern brought the set to 23-15 before kills were exchanged by both teams. A floater kill for Gennari and kills by Clent and Lambers for Campbell brought it to 24-17. A final devastating blow by Smith gave the Huskies the set 25-17, a four-set victory.
The Huskies played their final home game Nov. 10 against Campbell and won in four sets. The team hopes to pull away with wins against the College of Charleston (21-8, 13-3 CAA) in its final road series of the regular season on Nov. 15 and 16.
