Graduate student distance runner Abigail Hassman finished with a time of 15:47.59 in the 5,000 meter Dec. 7, breaking her own indoor track CAA record by 10 seconds.
The Northeastern indoor track team was competing at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville season opener when Hassman started the season off on the right foot.
Hassman is in her final year at Northeastern after running on the team since 2020. In those years she has been able to shave off over a minute from her 5K time while cementing herself as a star of the program. She also holds the CAA indoor track record in the 3,000 meter with a time of 9:09.67 and two outdoor track records including 4:40.40 in the mile and 15:41.40 in the 5,000 meter.
Hassman has most recently returned from winning a third-consecutive CAA cross-country championship — a 6,000 meter race where she also holds the school record, with a time of 19:57.5. Last year, she became the first woman in Northeastern history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in cross-country.
Hassman was elected captain for both the cross-country team and the indoor and outdoor track teams for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. She has also led the Student Athletic Association Council this year as president.
