With only one good shoulder, sophomore defender Julia Marty lifted No. 10 Northeastern (6-1-2, 3-1-0) to a 4-1 win over Maine (2-8-0, 0-4-0) Sunday.
A native of Nussbaumen, Switzerland, Marty suited up in spite of her injured arm and scored three goals, including the game-winner. Just more than one minute into the second period, sophomore forward Kristi Kehoe won an offensive zone face-off by sliding the puck back to Marty, who gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead by beating Maine’s Genevieve Turgeon with a shot from the blue line.
“She had a great game. She’s still not 100 percent with her injury, but she jumps up into the play so well and helps us create offense,” said assistant coach Linda Lundrigan.
The Huskies won without head coach Dave Flint, who was in Lake Placid, working with the US Select Team as it competed in the Four Nations Cup this week. Lundrigan handled the head coaching duties Sunday.
“I think the only adjustments that needed to be made were, from a team stand-point, bouncing back after the Boston College game and getting back to the way we were playing that made us successful,” Lundrigan said.
The Huskies suffered their only regulation loss of the season when the Eagles shut them out, 5-0, Nov. 1 at Matthews Arena. Marty missed that game because of a shoulder subluxation, which occurs when the upper arm bone slips partially out of its socket.
“The shoulder is not healed that good, and my doctors in Switzerland, they were like ‘don’t play.’ But it’s hard to sit out and so I was like, ‘yeah, I want to play, and I think I can help the team,’ so I played,” Marty said.
She now has three goals and seven assists this season, matching her totals from last year, when she played 31 games as a freshman at New Hampshire.
Before assisting on Marty’s first goal, Kehoe gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead at 2:55 of the first period. With seven goals and two assists this season, Kehoe is one point behind Marty, the team scoring leader.
Freshman goaltender Florence Schelling extended her season-opening unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), turning aside 27 of the 28 shots the Black Bears sent her way.
The Huskies play at Wayne State Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Northeastern will not be in action at home again until January.
