During the weekend, Britney Brown helped lead the Huskies to victory over opponents Virginia Commonwealth and William and Mary, leading to her recognition in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with Player of the week honors. Along with her gameplay over the weekend, Brown has also earned Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
“It was a great honor to get this [award],” Brown said. “I play really aggressive, but as a sophomore this year, I’m in a much bigger pool than last year, and there’s a lot of talent there, so it’s a big honor.”
Brown’s strong plays over the weekend come after a two-week illness when she did not practice at full capacity, something she found frustrating.
“It’s stressful not being able to play, so from here out I need to stay healthy,” she said.
Brown started the weekend last Friday recording a double-double in a sweep of VCU. She posted 10 kills with a .421 percentage. She also racked up 18 assists in the game.
She followed her Friday performance with a triple-double against William and Mary, where Northeastern came out on top with a 3-1 win. Brown had a career best with 15 kills, 30 assists and 13 digs. She also notched two serving aces and two blocks.
“Our whole team played really well this weekend,” Brown said. “This was a team effort.”
Brown is a sophomore business major from Edwards, Colo. Before coming to Northeastern, Brown played volleyball for three years. In high school, she was captain of her volleyball team both her junior and senior years, and was named All-League and All-State her junior and senior years, in addition to other awards and local and state recognitions.
The sophomore also became the first Husky to be named to the CAA Player of the Week this season. Currently, Brown ranks third in kills with 124, second in assists with 275, and is just shy of 1,000 career assists. Brown also leads the CAA in serving aces, with 20 to her record this season.
Brown looks ahead to the season, sharing lofty goals with her team.
“We definitely want to host the CAA tournament this year,” she said. “To do that, we have to come in first in the CAA, which is definitely something that we can do this year because we have a great team.”
Should that go well, Brown said she thinks the team will go even further.
“I think we’re doing good this year, and we have potential, so I would love it if we could go on to the NCAA tournament. For that, we have to win, so we’ll see how it goes.”
The Huskies are currently 11-7 overall, but are a dominant 5-0 in the CAA. Their next game is tomorrow at 7 p.m. against the Georgia State Panthers at Solomon Court.
