The Huskies continue to perform disappointingly in the America East, getting slammed by Maine and New Hampshire this past week after a promising start against Vermont at the beginning of the month.
This past Saturday, the Huskies (3-11, 1-3 AE) took a trip to UNH to challenge the Wildcats at Lundholm Gymnasium. Unfortunately, the Wildcats (7-7, 2-1 AE) took the lead and triumphed over the Huskies 63-58.
To start the game, Melissa Kowalski drained her 138th three point shot to start the contest, breaking Tesha Tinsley’s old record of 137. NU came out with an early 10-6 lead, but was answered by an 8-0 run by UNH. A 9-0 Husky run of their own gave Northeastern the lead back, albeit temporarily, 19-14.
The rest of the match was a battle; each time NU closed in on a lead, New Hampshire countered with a spurt of their own. The Huskies would not lead until NU had a 39-37 advantage with 15:28 left in the game. The teams alternated leads throughout the period, however neither team led by more than four points at a time.
Then, with 1:30 remaining, the score 57-56 UNH, the Wildcats took charge and ended the game, showing true dominance over the dogs.
Northeastern head coach Willette White cited missed chances, noting, “We had the opportunity, but just did not take advantage of it… and that is what we’re working on is creating opportunities for ourselves and taking advantage of it.”
Northeastern made an appearance in Maine last Wednesday, but the dogs were muzzled by the Black Bears (9-4, 2-0 AE), falling 64-50. The Bears held NU’s top three scores under double digits, as Aisha Williams had six points, Francesca Vanin with four, and Melissa Kowalski scored two.
“We’re a young team, not used to winning,” states Coach White. That said, experience is the remedy for these young guns; their next contest, a home affair against Stony Brook on Wednesday, should serve the purpose.
