The date has been set and the curriculum has been finalized.
As the major components of the transition from a quarter calendar to a semester system are falling into place, the weekly course sequences and co-op schedules have also been completed.
The Faculty Senate approved the weekly course sequence under the semester system. Under semesters, students will be in classes for fifteen weeks rather than the current eleven week system. The semester conversion newsletter reported that most four-semester-hour classes will meet for sixty-five minutes three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) or one hundred minutes twice a week (Tuesday and Friday, Monday and Wednesday or Monday and Thursday).
With the new scheduling scheme, more classrooms will be made available.
“With the new schedule it will create more classroom time slots, which will allow for the university to run more efficiently,” said Ann Comer the communications manager for the office of the provost.
One aspect of the scheduling will remain the same under the semester calandar: activities period. Two one hour and forty minute sessions will be held every week on Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:25 p.m. and on Thursday from 2:50 to 4:30 p.m.
As for the other half of Northeastern’s offerings, a fifth co-op rotation will be offered. A graph depicts the five rotations during quarters and semesters. All co-ops will follow a six month rotation. The only exception to this rule is for students graduating in 2004, 2007 or students in the Bouve College of Health Sciences.
The office of semester conversion also reiterated the importance of students meeting with their academic advisor as well as their co-op advisor to help in a seamless transition and to assure that students graduate on time.
