Breaking the stereotype

The current events surrounding both the Gamma Phi Kappa and Alpha Kappa Sigma fraternities have shed a negative light on what Greek life is all about.

In an age where the current generation is all about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, that is what the word “fraternity” has come to represent – party animals. It’s nice to see that some fraternities are taking their brotherhood one step further and helping the community, not just being host to a popularity contest.

After hearing that a relative of one of their brothers had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon banded together along with their chapter at MIT to raise $1700 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The efforts of the fundraiser have been speculated as one of the largest Greek fundraisers ever on campus. Large programs that benefit and involve the community — both in and around NU — should be more prevalent on our campus, and will help to set an image of fraternities that strays from the stereotype.
