Man on the Street: Erikah Martin

By Margarita Neplokh

Now that the temperature is down to below zero temperatures, the thing to do is to stay in and watch television with friends. While you are shivering behind your covers and trying to flip from infomercial to infomercial, you may come across some old movies, something like out of another world in our minds.

The dresses and elaborate hairstyles may be too extreme for college life, but certain things are not. Look at old film noire flicks or any movie made before 1970, the things you will find in most of these movies are that the women dress classy. Nothing about these women is jarring nor bright and blatant, but they stand out in their own special way.

They dress with panache, simple clothes that will never go out of style from cold to warm, season to season, and even college to college. Our next man on the street embodies that style perfectly. She does not follow the trends, but uses classy references in her clothes, such as knee-length skirts and a slick hairstyle to come up with a smooth combo perfect for Northeastern. Erika Martin, 19, a freshman political science major from Agawam, Mass. uses her sense of style to define a classic look for our generation.

The Northeastern News: What kind of priority is fashion in your life at Northeastern?

Erika Martin: Fashion is not my main concern here. I like to be comfortable. I do not think I need to be fashionable to fit in.

The News: Does how you dress represent you 100 percent?

Martin: I like to think so. The way that I dress is special to me. I try to look conservative, but have one article of clothing that makes me different from others.

The News: What is your opinion of the Northeastern fashion scene; do you think there is one or do you think it needs improvement?

Martin: It is hard to generalize the way people dress here. People wear sweat pants and others dress up. Actually, it does not really matter what people look like. To each his own.

The News: How would you describe your fashion sense? Classy or chic?

Martin: Classic, I like things that are timeless and that I can wear for a long time, turtlenecks and jeans. I am not really a trendy dresser, I like things that I can wear season to season.

The News: If you could not live without one thing in your closet, what would it be?

Martin: Flip-flops. I know it’s winter, but definitely flip-flops.

The News: Heels or sneakers?

Martin: Sneakers, I love comfort.

The News: Glam or low key?

Martin: Low key, I like the natural look. I do not wear a lot of makeup, and I do not like to look made up.

The News: If you could outlaw one piece of clothing, what would it be?

Martin: Pointy stiletto boots.

The News: If you could raid one celebrity’s closet, who would it be?

Martin: Reese Witherspoon. I really liked her style in “Sweet Home Alabama.”

The News: What is your ultimate perfect accessory?

Martin: I have a purse fetish. If I see a purse that I am drawn to, I would buy it.
