The Northeastern track and field team took on their last three meets of the indoor season Feb. 14 and 15. The Boston College Eagle Elite Invitational took place Feb. 14, the MIT Gordon Invitational Feb. 15 and the Valentine Invitational spanned both days. With multiple new personal bests and one school record on the board, the Huskies conclude their season and look towards CAA Championships at the end of the month.
At the Valentine Invitational, junior Conall Rogers kicked the day off as the fastest Husky in the 800-meter, clocking a 1:53.36-minute time for a top 100 finish. In the mile, graduate student Daniel Caso crossed the line at 4:11.61 minutes to lead Northeastern in the event and set a new personal best. Freshmen Cian Gara Grady and Jack Mattingly also set new personal bests at 4:15.74 minutes and 4:19.60 minutes, respectively.
Senior Benjamin Godish kept up the success, breaking his own program record in the 3000-meter. Racing across the line at 7:51.52 minutes, Godish beat his previous time by one-tenth of a second. This 20th place finish marked his second time clocking a new record in the event this season.
Sophomore Ryan Sarney and freshman Nico Boyle also competed in the 3000-meter, and both set new personal bests. Sarney ran an 8:13.53-minute race, and Boyle ran an 8:16.21-minute race, both surpassing their previous times by more than five seconds.
On day two of the Valentine Invitational, graduate student Stephanie Kriss started off strong for the women’s team with a new personal best in the 1000-meter, tallying a 12th place finish at 2:48.96 minutes. She broke her previous best time by almost four seconds. Senior Lucy Abdow also competed in the event, running a 2:56.38-minute race for 24th place.
In the 3000-meter race, graduate student Azza Borovicka-Swanson crossed the line at 9:48.58 minutes to be the first Husky to finish. Sophomore Keira Gamily followed at 10:00.22 minutes in her first attempt at the event, and sophomore Natasha Sortland set a new personal best of 10:10.89, beating her previous best by more than seven seconds.
At the Eagle Elite Invitational Feb. 14, graduate student Savion Thompson continued an impressive season with an 8.16-second, fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Jaice Dorsey also competed in the event on the women’s side, sprinting into 13th with an 8.89-second time.
Graduate student Tristen Howard blazed through the 60-meter preliminaries, winning the race at 9.78 seconds. Sophomore Brunner Williams followed in fifth at 6.89 seconds, and sophomore Vance Thorpe at 6.99 seconds — a personal best. Williams went on to take third in the 60-meter final at 6.85 seconds.
In the men’s 400-meter, sophomore Johnny Emmanuel sped into 13th with a time of 48.71 seconds. In the women’s 400-meter, junior Ariann Robinson earned ninth with a 55.80-second race, and freshman Morgan Hayward ran a 57.05-second race to join the top 15.
Freshman Sloan Hinton led the Huskies in the 800-meter, coming in 28th at 2:15.21 minutes. Sophomore Waverly Hassman followed just over a second later, and freshman Anna Lonergan set a new personal best of 2:20.60 to come in top 40.
Williams continued an accomplished afternoon with a second-place finish in the men’s 200-meter, blazing across the line at 21.22 seconds. Freshman Taeshawn Berry and Thorpe also competed, finishing at 21.88 seconds and 22.16 seconds respectively. Both joined Williams in the top 20. In the women’s 200-meter, freshmen Ailani Sutherland and Zaida De Pina took 17th and 19th at 25.78 seconds and 26.21 seconds, respectively.
As the meet came to a close, senior Lauren Trejo kept up the energy with a new personal best of 5:05.58 minutes in the mile. Senior Shannon Trevor followed at 5:09.57 minutes. Finally, the meet concluded with the 4×400-meter relay, in which a team of Hayward, sophomore Savannah Blair, A. Robinson, and Hinton worked together to place third at 3:47.57 minutes. This time put them 10th on the All-Time Indoor Performance List.
The next day at the MIT Gordon Invite, freshman Lily Poteet and Ella Dunbury dashed into first and second in the 3000-meter. Poteet snagged first with a 10:35.36 minute finish, and Dunbury followed at 10:51.58 minutes.
Freshman Emily McCann claimed Northeastern’s second win of the afternoon in the mile, pacing herself across the laps for a 5:17.62-minute finish.
In the women’s 60-meter preliminary, freshman Genevieve Duchaussee recorded a 9.27-second finish, placing first and qualifying for the final. Freshman Madison Phillips also qualified for the final with a seventh-place time of 9.96-seconds. In the 60-meter final, Duchaussee earned second at 9.35 seconds, and Phillips took seventh again with a 9.98-second finish.
In the field events, junior Leila Curtis launched a 13.54-meter throw in the women’s shot put, taking second place. Graduate student Madeleine Duchaussee and senior Claire Kuzma threw 11.50 meters and 11.05 meters, respectively, to join Curtis in the top 10. Genevieve Duchaussee and Phillips made their first attempts at the event, throwing 10.34 meters and 10.14 meters, respectively.
Sophomore Ohan Ambartsoumian also finished second in the men’s shot put, reaching 14.55 meters on his second toss. Freshman Casey Rockett competed alongside Ambartsoumian in his shot put debut, and threw a 9.70-meter toss.
In the pole vault, senior Athanasios Pantazopoulos won the event and tied his personal best of 4.85-meters. Junior Max Zuckerman followed in sixth at 4.45 meters, and sophomore Alexander Yuen and junior Kevin Xu claimed seventh and eighth at 4.30 meters and 4.15 meters, respectively.
Graduate student Hope Belvit hurled a 17.69-meter toss in the women’s weight throw to take second place. Madeleine Duchaussee threw 13.89 meters to join Belvit in the top 10.
In the women’s pole vault, sophomore Hannah Shaw finished second, sailing over the bar at 3.55 meters. Sophomore Katie Rodriguez followed in fifth with a 3.40-meter vault.
Genevieve Duchaussee rounded out her afternoon with fifth place in the long jump, reaching 4.75 meters. Junior Mia Belanger leaped into 10th at 4.52 meters, and Phillips took 11th with a 4.48-meter jump.
In the men’s long jump, Thompson finished in eighth with a 6.33-meter jump. Junior Jordan Spencer and sophomore Ian Solberg joined Thompson in the top 15 with 6.00-meter and 5.91-meter jumps, respectively.
Finally, graduate student Nicholas Pisciotta recorded a new personal best in the men’s weight throw, winning the event at 19.20 meters. This throw moved him into seventh place on the All-Time Performance List. Senior Tremain Robinson took third with an 18.17-meter toss, and sophomore Aidan Moreau and freshman Zackery DelSasso joined the top 10 with 14.90 meters and 14.20 meters, respectively.
Following the conclusion of the indoor season, the Huskies have two weeks to prepare for the CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Championships will be held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, VA Feb. 26 to 27.
