Track teams look ahead to 5th annual Husky Invitational

This Saturday the Northeastern men’s and women’s track teams will play host to 14 different schools at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center for the fifth installment of the annual Husky Indoor Invitational.

The 14 team field of visitors are Boston College, Bentley, Colgate, the University of Connecticut (women), New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Florida, Stonehill, Syracuse, UMass-Amherst (women), UMass-Lowell, Vermont (women), Williams and Yale.

Both teams are coming off victories at the Great Dane Classic held in New York two weeks ago. Although thrower Vinny Tortorella is the lone returning NU champion, the current batch of Husky runners promises to turn in positive results.

Sophomore sprinting blaze Idris Payne has already experienced an impressive season, even though he’s only four meets in. Two weeks ago, at the Great Dane Classic, Payne tied a 23-year-old record in the 400 with a time of 47.75. He received the meet’s Most Outstanding Performer award for his achievements.

A week before that, Payne set a new NU record in the 200, blasting past the finish line in 21.7 seconds. He’s won seven of his eight races thus far this year.

Tortorella also figures to be prominent on the score sheet. The reigning America East weight throw champion has been a fixture of first and second place tosses at all levels. New England championships, NCAA meet triumphs – Tortorella has done it all.

The women’s team should also turn in a competitive performance. Senior Ebony Jack has been the AE champion in the 55-meter dash. Fellow sprinting sensation Ahndraea Allen currently holds the title in the 200, setting a meet record last season (24.69 seconds). Newcomer Jordine Kimbrel should also factor in the meet. The freshman has won all five of the races she’s competed in this season. Against Harvard, Kimbrel broke a seven year NU record in the 200, taking a measly 24.3 seconds to finish the event.

The meet begins at 4:30 p.m.
