A 20-year-old student was arrested for possession of a class B substance with the intent to distribute Monday, after Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD) found him with more than an ounce of marijuana in his room in West Village A.
Trouble started for the student, David Young, a middler political science and economics major, Thursday, Oct. 23, when a Resident Assistant called NUPD after finding marijuana, a bong, pipe and other drug paraphernalia during a pre-announced room inspection. Young admitted to NUPD that it was all his, and was left with an Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) citation.
Young was arrested when a detective visited his apartment Monday for a follow-up inspection about drug abuse and found evidence he was selling marijuanna.
“We had forgotten about [the inspections] and left a bong in the room from the night before,” Young said. “[NUPD] came for a follow-up inspection and we were caught just splitting weed between me and my roommate. My roommate opened the door and we didn’t have any chance to hide it.”
Young said he was the only one arrested because he was caught with a scale. His roommate was reported to OSCCR.
“They cuffed me in my room and brought me to the Northeastern station,” he said. “From there they took me to Brighton. I was in a holding cell for five hours until my father bailed me out.”
Young was arraigned Tuesday in Roxbury District Court, said media spokesperson for Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Jake Wark, and his bail was set at $240. He was released and is expected back in court in December, Wark said.
Young said the hearing date was set, but he did not know the details. He said he has a meeting with OSCCR on Friday.”
Interim university spokesperson Jim Chiavelli said arrests like this are unfortunate.
“I think it’s disappointing whenever anybody is accused of a crime,” he said. “It’s just disappointing when one of our students gets arrested, no matter where.”
